Myth 3: How I think about my audience doesn't matter.
Truth: How you view your listeners is more important than the words you say.
Your perception of your audience shows in:
- Your demeanor
- Your words
- Your ability to be understood
- How you look at them
- How you talk to them
For instance, when you think (whether its true or not) that the audience doesn't care about what you are saying, you will/can:
- Slouch, are more likely to physically stumble, drop your notes and fidget.
- Start to stutter and forget the point of what you're saying
- Say things like 'you might not understand this', 'its hard to understand', and 'I can never explain this well'
- Speak too fast or slow, too softly, mutter, murmur and mispronounce words
- Take more time than needed explaining things, or not enough time
- Your expression will indicate that you're desperate for their attention, or sad
- that you're not getting any, or show your frustration at not being heard.
- Your tone of voice will be one of whining (why don't they understand me?),
- frustration, boredom, regret, anger ect.
Replace your old views of the audience with new ones.
Here are a few examples.
- They are eager for what you've got to say
- They would love to take on actions that you suggest
- You are all humans sharing a beautiful moment

“Hi Karletta, I love public speaking and if this information was available when I was starting out I would have grabbed it with both hands and reviewed on a regular basis.”
