What is Colonic Hydrotherapy? Simply put Colonic Hydrotherapy, also known as Colonic Irrigation is the washing out of the lower bowel by a gentle enema, (a liquid injected through the anus that stimulates evacuation).

Colonic Hydrotherapy

What is Colonic Hydrotherapy benneficial for?

Colonic Hydrotherapy may be benneficial if you have any of the following.

1. Bloating

2. Constipation

3. Irregular Bowel function

4. As part of a general Detox program

5. To assisst in weight loss

6. To improve general gut function

7. Arthritis

How should I prepare for the Colonic?

We recommend the following steps prior to your treatment:

1. Arrive at the Clinic with plenty of time so that you are not stressed or rushed.

2.  Do not eat for two hours prior to the appointment.  The treatment is more comfortable if the stomach is empty.

3. Drink plenty of fluids including fresh water or herbal infusions.  Avoid caffeinated drinks.

4. Encourage beneficial intestinal flora by eating plenty of dietary fiber and consuming unsweetened yoghurt or a good probiotic supplement.

5. Wear appropriate clothing to your appointment (during the treatment you will need to remove your lower half clothes).  You will be given a gown to wear during the procedure, however.

What should I do after the Colonic?

1. Drink plenty of fluids

2. Take a prebiotic and probiotic supplement for two weeks after the treatment to encourage the repopulation of the gut with beneficial bacteria.

3. Eat softer foods such as scrambled eggs, soups and unsweetened yoghurt.

4. Avoid heavy meat consumption for two days post treatment; eat fish instead.

5. On the day of the treatment you may feel tired so it is advised to plan a light day or activity post treatment.

The Procedure:

You will be directed to a comfortable treatment room where the Colonic will take place.  A gown will be provided for your to wear.

Once changed you will be asked to lie on your left side with your knees drawn up towards your chest.  At this stage the practitioner will drape you so that your dignity is preserved.

The practitioner will then carry out a brief physical inspection of the anus to check for hemorrhoids or signs of bleeding.  Once complete an enema tube will be gently inserted and a constant flow of water will be administered into the lower bowel until tolerance is reached.  At this stage the patient will be asked to go to the toilet to evacuate the bowel.

When the patient has completed this part of the treatment another enema will be administered containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium lonum (250ml to 500ml).  This enema will be held in the lower bowel for five minutes then the patient will be asked once again to evacuate the bowel in the toilet.

The treatment is then completed.
