We are often asked what to look for in a personal trainer – here are 5 considerations for you to keep in mind.

1 REPs registration
REPs is the Register of Exercise Professionals - the regulation body for exercise professionals, facilities and education providers.  You can be sure that if your personal trainer is REPs registered they have been independently verified as meeting industry standards on an ongoing basis.  Registration with REPs is an annual process requiring personal trainers to keep up to date with the latest in training and education.  REPs is recognised in 160 facilities in New Zealand as well as in more than 35 countries.

2 Will they give you what you need?
All personal trainers can help you to 'tone up, lose weight'.  A great personal trainer will help to you set goals that are SMART - specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely. If you have something particular in mind (for example, an event) choose someone with the right experience.

3 Do they walk the walk?
Your trainer should live the healthy lifestyle you are striving to achieve.  If they can do it so can you.  If the trainer you choose is overweight or doesn't workout as you think they should, perhaps they are not the trainer you are looking for.

4 What does their advertising say?
Check out their website, Facebook site and any other advertising material to see if you think the trainer you choose is right for you.

5 Try before you buy
Most personal trainers will give you a complimentary training session before you commit to an ongoing programme.  Use this opportunity to ask questions, consider if you think you can work with them, find out how they will guide you to your goal and familiarise yourself with the process.

Your relationship with your personal trainer is just that, its personal.  So its imperative you feel comfortable with that person so that you can ask questions, share your concerns and work through any issues that arise.
