Dr Jonathan Moy graduated with psychology (BSc) and medical (MBChB) degrees from the University of Otago. He has a GradCert Career Development from AUT. He spent several years working as a medical doctor in hospitals and clinics around NZ and Australia. He spent a further 4 years working in psychiatry treating mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety and psychosis with standard medical treatments as well as psychotherapy modalities including cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic psychotherapy and transactional analysis. He has also been employed as a medical advisor at the Ministry of Health involved in the monitoring and regulation of the use of prescription medicines.
He has published research in social psychology, conducted research in schizophrenia and in prevention of sudden infant death syndrome. He has also written and edited medical-related articles and continues to write on topics of careers, lifestyle and health.
At mid-life, Jonathan took a shift in career-direction to take some time out for professional studies in career development and moved his focus from working with ill people to assisting well people reach their full potential in career and life. Currently, he continues an interest in medicine and psychiatry but for purely lifestyle balance he now dedicates his time to career consultation, family, writing and participating in regular charitable work.
Jonathan has a passion for talking with people about their career issues. He understands the complex interaction of work, family and leisure in life having a spouse and children of his own. He has a deep understanding of psychological, social and cultural issues from his experience in psychiatric and psychotherapy practice.
Jonathan subscribes membership to, adheres to the code of ethics & professional conduct of the Career Development Association of New Zealand (CDANZ). As a medical professional he is accountable to the Health and Disability Commission (HDC) and New Zealand Medical Council (NZMC).
